Mid-Week Woes and Conference Strength Continues for OSU

The Cowboy baseball team enjoyed a 3-1 week, with the only loss coming from a home, mid-week tilt with Oral Roberts. The Pokes swept Kansas.

OSU stepped up in the first inning of the ORU game and hit back-to-back bombs to take an early 2-0 lead. That should have rattled the pitcher, but make no mistake, ORU came charging back. The Golden Eagles went on to win the game 10-5. With the win, ORU has won eight of the last nine meetings with the Pokes.

The Cowboys and Jayhawks scheduled a doubleheader on Friday to avoid the torrential rain in Stillwater on Saturday. The first game was a breeze for the Cowboys in a 12-1 run-rule of the Jayhawks. OSU’s Christian Funk led the way for the Cowboys with a grand-slam and a two-run home run. His two-run shot ended the game in run rule fashion.

The second game of the doubleheader saw OSU take a great deal of momentum, with Joe Lienhard, the usual ace, pitch the game. Carson Teel, the usual Saturday pitcher, threw the first game. OSU was looking at a shutout but would sneak away with a 4-3 win.

On Sunday, Kansas put up 3 runs in as many innings and had the Cowboys shut out until the seventh inning. A string of base hits in the seventh put up a 4 spot for OSU, and would be the only inning in which they would score. The Cowboys won 4-3 and notched their 3rd Big 12 sweep, and the Kansas State Championship, as OSU has now swept both Kansas teams.

With the win, and barring a miracle from Texas Tech, (who was down 7-1 when this was written) OSU will be in sole possession of first place in the Big 12.

UP NEXT- OSU will travel to Dallas for a Tuesday evening date with Dallas Baptist, a mid-major college baseball powerhouse. The weekend series will be for the conference Bedlam series. The Friday game of the Bedlam series will be played in Stillwater, while Saturday and Sunday’s games will be played in Tulsa at the Tulsa Drillers’ ONEOK Field.
