Thunder Roll in Season Opener

By: Trinton Mills

The NBA season is in full swing and the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated in their home opener against the New York Knicks With a final score of 105 to 84, Paul George lead all scorers with 28 points. Other players that produced were Russell Westbrook, who racked in another triple double with  21 points, 16 assists, and 10 boards. Carmelo Anthony added another 21 points on an impressive 7-12 shooting.

Russell Westbrook came out with a quote the other day saying that “defense was going to be their main focus all year long” and it showed. With new editions to the team, the thunder looked really good defensively. They forced 11 turnovers in just the 1st quarter, and 26 on the game. The one determining factor of the game that is obvious is the points off of the fast break. OKC had 35 compared to New York’s 8. They were really active and had multiple deflections. The defense had 14 steals in total. Steven Adams  lead the way with 5 steals and also added 5 boards. If the Thunder keep up this defensive aggression, they could be a championship contender, especially with all of the offensive weapons they have.

Offensively the Thunder got off to a slow start,
But really got it going late in the 2nd quarter and all throughout the 2nd half. Russ had a triple double (his 80th overall), Paul George lead all scorers with 28, and Melo had 21. The lack of chemistry was obvious, but it will come with time. When Russ had the ball in his hands and made plays for himself and his teammates, the Thunder looked a lot better off than when he was passing it off a lot in the beginning of the game. Guys like Roberson and Abrines stepped up big and looked solid. The Thunder bench is solid this year, and could be one of the biggest assets in their success this season.
