The first Black and Gold Derby began in a downpour as the skies opened as the match started. The play of the match was dreary like the weather for the first 15 minutes. After the weather died down the play sped up.
The Energy got on the board first, with a goal from the foot of Daniel Gonzalez in the 39th minute. Gonzalez’s goal arched over the Roughnecks keeper when he was out position. To enter halftime the Energy FC were in good position staying on the offensive and leading 1-0.
The second half was a different story. In the 49th minute after a handball on the Energy, the Roughnecks Caffa had a penalty kick and Energy keeper Laurendi dove to the right while the ball floated left to tie the match 1-1.
Then 17 minutes later the Roughnecks scored again for the last goal of the match. Calisti shot a ball through traffic that snuck in just next to the post to be the winning goal of the match.
With Woj and Craven injured the Energy struggled to equalize the match in the final minutes. Energy FC goalie Cody Laurendi had six saves in the match, which kept it close considering the injuries the Energy have dealt with this season.
“They punched us in the mouth and said what are you gonna do about it,” Laurendi said. “I have faith in this group we can refocus and move on.”
The Energy’s will look to bounce back in their next USL match at San Antonio FC on July 14th while the Tulsa Roughnecks will look to keep the momentum going as they play the LA Galaxy II on July 13th.
