For Those who do not speak, the beautiful German language auf wiederersehen means goodbye. If you don’t understand the reference I am trying to get at I am talking about the rumors swirling around about the US men’s national soccer team possibly parting ways with coach Jürgen Klinsman. The USMNT have lost the last two world cup qualifying games. The first was Mexico by the score of 2-1, and the second was a 4-0 blowout to Costa Rica. We understand as USMNT fans that playing against Mexico will always be a tough rivalry team to beat. Much like the Red Rivalry with OU and Texas no matter what the circumstances are either team has a chance to win the game. But to lose to Mexico and then get blown out by Costa Rica is a big disappointment and a huge step back from where this team was in 2014. This is almost the same team the US beat 4-0 back in June at the Copa America tournament.
The downfall of the U.S. losing was all in the formation. Jürgen opted to go with the 3-5-2 formation instead of his traditional 4-4-2. In theory, this could be a great formation for this team. It gives the six players that can score for the US the opportunity to score in Bobby Wood, Jozy Altidore, Fabian Johnson, Christian Pulisic, Jermaine Jones, and Michael Bradley. The one mistake was starting Timothy Chandler over DeAndre Yedlin. Yedlin is so fast he would have been able to open the side of the field to get Altidore and others open shots. To Jürgen’s credit, he did make the substitution but it was way too late. Also, we must remember that we are one lucky header in the 89th minute from this game being a tie.
The US-Costa Rica game was a horrible showing. From John Brooks getting nutmegged and getting his ankles broken to Guzan blocking a shot with his face. The team quit on the game. The defense were miscommunicating the whole game which resulted in easy goals. The US are now in last place in the group.
The top three teams advance to the world cup and the team that finishes fourth has to go into a playoff with the fourth-place team from another group. The US has a lot of work to do if they are going to crack the top three.
USMNT fans need to take a step back and take a deep breath before calling for Jürgen to be fired. These are just two games, they can still make the World Cup. Jürgen has a lot of Sam Presti in him. They both make moves that will make you scratch your head but in the end, it will work out. He is seeing what he has in this team, and he will find the right lineup. Geoff Cameron and Clint Dempsey are both still hurt and when they get them back it will help immensely. Don’t forget Brooks and Pulisic are rising superstars which the team will build around. If you got rid of Jürgen there are not a lot of people breaking down the door to get this job, it’s best to wait and see what Jürgen has up his sleeve and ride out this World Cup.
