RGV Toros took care of business at home, stifling the Energy and ending their impressive unbeaten run at 8 games. Heavy winds played a major factor early as Toros star Jose Escalante’s shot in the 14th minute from the deep left took a deflection off Energy defender Cyprian Hedrick. After hanging in the wind just long enough to beat keeper Cody Laurendi, the ball dropped in the net marking the first, but not last, goal for the Toros.
The Energy weren’t without opportunities early themselves as Kyle Hyland forced an impressive save out of Toros keeper Callum Irving from the left wing, also aided by the wind. It was pretty much all downhill from there though as Toros forward Kyle Murphy scored a back-breaking 41st-minute goal after a nice turn and finish inside the box.
The Energy tried to bounce back just after halftime, forcing Irving to make back to back saves but couldn’t threaten further with the attack. Despite an Escalante red card a few minutes after halftime, the Energy struggled to find players going forward. The combination of elements, tough defense, and a consistent attack kept the Energy off balance and unable to find players like Danni Konig on offense.
RGV drove the final nail on an Eric Bird goal in stoppage time to cap off the 3-0 defeat. The Energy are now 4-2-4 and look to regroup June 18 against Swope Park Rangers.
